Where Olive Trees Weep offers an insight into the journey , the struggles of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.

The film gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people the film makers met on their 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. Their universally human stories speak of intergenerational pain, trauma and resilience. We hope they touch your heart, stir compassion and understanding, and give rise to a pursuit for justice. For without justice, peace remains an empty slogan.

Cinema can be a powerful force for change. Our aim is, beyond mere education, to truly move hearts and minds and inspire audiences to echo the calls for freedom, equality and dignity that have gone unanswered for far too long.

Genre: Documentary

Runtime: 1h 44m

Where Olive Trees Weep

About the film

Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice. We follow, among others, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation, expulsions, imprisonment, home demolitions, water deprivation, and denial of basic human rights. Yet, through the veil of oppression, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty?

Next Rally, Adelaide People!

Join thousands of South Australians at the steps of Parliament House as we again turn out to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people and express our outrage at this genocide against them by the state of Israel.

Speakers

Hon Tammy Franks MLC

This rally will hear from Hon Tammy Franks MLC, Parliamentary Leader of The Greens SA. She will tells us about what The Greens have been doing to to confront the Australian Government’s deplorable response to the genocide in Gaza, as well as address the attack on The Greens as antisemitic.

Adelaide Palestine Solidarity Rally - 2 June 2024

The genocide continues unabated as world leaders, including our leaders in Australia aid and abet the atrocities perpetrated on the Palestinian people in both Gaza and the West Bank.

After the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to cease its offensive in Rafah, Israel continued the onslaught and on 27 May, it bombed a displaced persons camp massacring over 45 people, including children, many of whom burnt to death as their tents were caught up in a raging fire.

What did our government say? Our Foreign Minister blamed Hamas and perpetuated the fantasy that it’s all about the Israeli hostages:

Australia is incapable of expressing outrage at Israel’s behaviour and appears to be unwilling to demand that Israel act according to International Law. Israel must be subject to international pressure, not mealy mouthed words!

We demand the following:

  • an immediate and permanent ceasefire

  • that unfettered humanitarian aid immediately is allowed into Gaza

  • that our government imposes sanctions on Israel

  • that our government recalls the Australian ambassador to Israel and expels the Israeli Ambassador to Australia

  • that Australia establishes an arms embargo on Israel and all defense materiel produced in Australia is banned from being sent to Israel

  • an end to the occupation and apartheid

Join your fellow South Australians who continue week after week to come out into the streets and demand justice and freedom for the Palestinians!

This daring film, to be screened at the Capri Theatre by Amnesty International Australia in partnership with the Australian Friends of Palestine Association and Adelaide for Assange, offers profound insights into the aftermath of the 1948 Nakba and the structures of settler colonialism and apartheid within Israel.

Action by Unionists for Palestine Adelaide

National Day of Action 25th May

No Trade with Apartheid Israel!

Saturday 25 May, 11am Corner St Vincent Street & Commercial Road, Port Adelaide

Adelaide based Australian Friends of Palestine Association (AFOPA) is proud to be involved with the national action calling for a boycott of Israeli company, Zim Shipping, and an end to all trade with Israel through Australian ports. AFOPA has strongly supported the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement since 2009 and have held weekly BDS actions in the heart of Adelaide for almost 14 years. As renowned Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy, said BDS is “the only game in town” for the Palestinians. The Unionists4Palestine SA’s action at Port Adelaide on 25 May along with the actions at ports in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Tasmania is a significant step forward in showing Israelis that there will be a devastating economic cost to their country if they pursue their policies of ethnic cleansing and genocide against the Palestinians. This movement will not rest until there is freedom and justice for Palestine. - Margaret Cassar, Australian Friends of Palestine Association (AFOPA), Adelaide.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION 25th MAY STATEMENT: During our boycott campaign against the Israeli ZIM shipping company a variety of different tactics were used as part of the BDS movement against Apartheid Israel.

This time we are marching on ports all around the country to expand the campaign and elevate our demands. For this national day of action we DO NOT INTEND TO BLOCKADE OR PICKET across any ports - the intent is to amass large crowds across all Australian ports to unify our calls to boycott Apartheid Israel and stop the genocide in Gaza.

We call on all sections of our community and all supportive organisations to join the rally. We encourage families, unions, Arab and Palestinian communities, students, and anti-Zionist Jews to take part in this mass demonstration. We call on Everyone who wants to see justice and freedom for the Palestinians to rally and march with us on May 25 to demand:

  • no trade with Apartheid Israel

  • cut ties with Apartheid Israel

  • cease fire now

  • drop all charges against arrestees who peacefully protested to demand a cease fire!

Protect Protest Rally & March (SA action)

Event by Extinction Rebellion South Australia, Extinction Rebellion Australia, Adelaide Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, Students for Palestine Adelaide, Trade Unionists for Palestine, Health Care Workers for Palestine Adelaide, Solidarity Adelaide and AFOPA

Join us at Parliament House on Thursday 16th May as we launch a campaign to repeal the undemocratic SA anti-protest laws on the first anniversary of their introduction.

Passed by the South Australian Parliament in just 20 minutes, and without consultation, these laws escalated penalties in the Summary Offences Act for obstructing public places from $750 to $50,000 (or 3 months) imprisonment.

These new laws are part of a concerning trend nationwide of introducing legislation to repress protest. They broaden the scope of offences that police can use and further criminalise peaceful community activism.

Protests and social movements have delivered our civil and political rights. Tolerance of dissent and even civil disobedience are hallmarks of a strong democracy. History has vindicated many acts of disobedience, including ‘Votes for Women’, the global suffrage movement; American Civil Rights Movement; Builder’s Labourers Federation Green Bans; and Vietnam Moratorium marches that blocked Adelaide intersections.

With implied threats of extreme fines and jail time, the new laws have had a chilling and repressive effect on protest. This often disproportionately impacts those with marginalised identities, who so often have played a key role in bringing about social change.

The South Australian community deserves laws that are the result of deliberation and consultation, not policy on the run, so we’re calling on the SA Parliament to go back to the drawing board and reconsider them.

The rally will be followed by an approved, optional march and symbolic sit-down. If you join the sit-down, you don’t have to sit - feel free to simply stand or kneel.

Commemorate Nakba 1948

Vigil to commemorate the original Nakba of 1948

As Israel plunges the Palestinians into a second Nakba, we will commemorate the original Nakba - the Catastrophe - of 1948, when Israel killed over 15,000 people, perpetrated over 70 massacres and occupied over three quarters of Palestine, with half of the Palestinian population made refugees.

The Nakba was a massive campaign of ethnic cleansing followed by the destruction of hundreds of villages, to prevent the return of the refugees, similar to what is being wrought now in Gaza.

The Nakba lies at the heart of seventy-six years of injustice for the Palestinians.

We will not forget 1948, and we will not forget the genocide now under way.

World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day

Join Amnesty International (SA/NT) and AFOPA for Adelaide’s World Press Freedom Day Rally

To mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, we’re shining a light on the importance of a free press. Right now, journalists are being locked up, tortured, threatened or even killed just for speaking out.

As at 4 April 2024, The International Federation of Journalists estimate that at least 102 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed, several have been injured and others are missing during the war in Gaza.

Freedom of expression is a human right

World Press Freedom Day provides an opportunity for people around the world to celebrate the fundamental human right to freedom of expression. Journalism is not a crime, yet the principles of free speech and a free press are threatened right across the world.

Every day, journalists around the world face the threat of intimidation, censorship, imprisonment and violence, including torture, for their efforts to report on human rights violations.

Journalists, media professionals, writers and activists all play a key part in maintaining freedom of expression and holding the powerful to account.

Why is a free press important?

A free press reports on the issues that interest us and shape our lives as a building block of any rights-respecting society. Fighting for a free press means supporting individual journalists as they report on human rights issues, and calling on governments to legislate for protections for media organisations.

Support Palestinian and international journalists as they seek to bring the truth to the world.

The launch of this book at a time when Zionist Israel has stepped up its genocide of the Palestinians is very welcome.

Apart from giving readers an insight into how progressive Jews contributed to movements for social justice and equality in many countries, it also shows that not all Jews approve of Zionism and what Zionist Israel has been doing to the Palestinians since the end of WW2. This also counters the argument by Zionist Jews and their supporters that those who criticise Israel’s brutal actions against Palestinians are being antisemitic.

Comments on the book:

This timely book is an excellent antidote to any attempt to de-historicise conflicts such as the one raging in historical Palestine. Pre-Zionist Jewish life and culture invalidates the absurd attempt to equate Zionism with Judaism and anti-Zionism with antisemitism. Ilan Pappé, Israeli historian

Nowhere else will you find a coherent account of the Jewish socialist tradition’s currents in eastern Europe, London, and New York. The tradition is counterposed to the Zionist fable that Jews can achieve security through militarism and colonisation. Rick Kuhn, ANU

We are witnessing unprecedented violence and destruction throughout Palestine - especially the Gaza Strip. Over 32,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, and thousands more are missing under the rubble. The occupied West Bank has also been targeted with raids and the detention of thousands of Palestinian people.

Founder and Director of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability, Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh says, "There is both a genocide and an ecocide going on, supported by some Western governments against the will of the Western public." An enormous global movement is rising to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, to end decades of colonisation, and work toward a free Palestine that delivers sustainable peace for all in the region.

For over 75 years, Palestinians have resisted occupation, dispossession, and ethnic cleansing. The environmental impacts of the occupation and destruction of Palestine are less understood: water sources have been restricted, destroyed and polluted; habitat loss is pushing species like wolves, gazelles, and hyenas to the brink; destruction of crops and farmland drives food insecurity; and climate change is already impacting Palestine and its people.

Join us to hear first-hand from one of Palestine’s foremost environmental experts Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh, visiting Australia for the first time, in conversation with local Palestinian, First Nations and environmental justice advocates. Connect with others working to grow the global solidarity movement for peace, land rights and environmental justice.
